KAIZAD GUSTAD AND KATRINA KAIF'S FIRST FILM BOOM BOMBED AT THE BOX-OFFICE BUT THE DIRECTOR SAYS HE KNEW THAT THE HARD WORKING ACTRESS WOULD MAKE IT BIG IN THE INDUSTRY.

Kaizad Gustad and Katrina Kaif's first film Boom bombed at the box-office but the director says he knew that the hard working actress would make it big in the industry.
Kaizad brought the 30-year-old British Indian actress into films and gave her a new surname Kaif. The director said when he first signed her she could not speak a single word in Hindi.
"I knew that Katrina will be top one actress because she was extremely hard-working and had strong perseverance.
Although she was half British, she looked Indian and that's why I signed her for my film. She didn't know a single word in Hindi. I have given her the surname Kaif because KK is lucky for me," Kaizad said.
After the film, Katrina bagged other projects including SarkarMaine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Namastey London among others, and gradually made her place to the top.
Amitabh Bachchan's performance in the 2003 film was panned by the critics but Kaizad said the megastar had enjoyed playing dark and crazy role.
"He was very happy and enjoying the shoot. People didn't like his negative role because Amitji's onscreen image is bigger than his characters. He didn't make any changes in the script and shot it the way it was written," Kaizad said.
The director took a break post Boom. After a gap of a decade Kaizad is making a comeback to films with Sachiin Joshi-Sunny Leone's thriller Jackpot.
The film being shot in Goa also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Makrand Deshpande and Southern star Bharath in pivotal roles.
"I didn't want to make films. I was in the state of semi-retirement. I was upset in my life. During those times, I wrote plays and travelled a lot. I wrote Jackpot for almost a year and thought I should start shooting it," he said.
He feels the audience has become mature and even directors are experimenting with new genres. "Society has changed. Cinema-viewing audience have changed. If I would have released Boom now it would have got some other response. We are even experimenting with new genres of film," he said.

Boom is a 2003 Indian black comedy thriller film released on 19 September 2003. It explores the involvement of the fashion world with underworld crime.

Directed by Kaizad Gustad and produced by Jackie Shroff's wife, Ayesha Shroff, the film features Amitabh BachchanJackie ShroffGulshan GroverPadma LakshmiMadhu SapreZeenat Aman and Katrina KaifBoom was Katrina Kaif's debut film. She was a last-minute replacement of model Meghna Reddy.[1]

Plot[edit]

Anu Gaekwad (Madhu Sapre), Sheila Bardez (Padma Lakshmi) and Rina Kaif (Katrina Kaif) are three of India's top models and they are participating in a fashion show hosted by a prestigious brand of diamond jewelers. While on the ramp of the fashion show, one of the other models (perhaps intentionally) trips Anu, and she goes crashing down, which is a model's worst nightmare. Anu's supportive friends, Sheila and Rina, come to the rescue. The trio immediately confront the model who had tripped Anu and the argument (held in front of the audience) degenerates into a catfight. As the women scuffle with each other, they are met with a big surprise. Hundreds of glittering stolen diamonds, which were due to be smuggled out of the country, fall from the model's hair and on to the ramp, only to be snatched up by paparazzi and celebrities alike.

Anu, Sheila and Rina are in shock as the fashion show turns to mayhem. The stolen diamonds are priceless and have to be recovered by the gangsters, who hold the three glamorous models responsible for the heist-gone-wrong. The diamonds were due to be smuggled to Dubai and were stolen by Chhote Mia (Jackie Shroff). They were then to be handed to his brothers. The leader of the trio, Bade Mia (Amitabh Bachchan) is determined to get the diamonds back and so begins a cat-and-mouse game between the three models and the three gangsters.

Cast[edit]

Box office[edit]

The film performed very poorly at the box office.[2] Its lifetime collections amounted to no less than Rs. 12 million .[3] The producer of the film, Ayesha Shroff, had to sell some assets for herself and her husband (Jackie Shroff) ;[4] the money owed to one financier alone amounted to Rs. 180 million. Shroff later indicated that her marriage suffered as a consequence, and that her relationship with her husband "was tough after Boom."[4]

Soundtrack[edit]

The soundtrack was composed by Sandeep Chowta and Talvin Singh.[5]
