Header Tags

Discovery Mosti

Header tags are the just ways of labelling your contents importance, in my opinion, header tags aren't one of the most important ranking factors but it is definitely something you want to construct well on a page. If you've ever had the chance to look at the source code on a website you'll notice tags in the code like this '<h1>, <br>, <a>'. These are pieces of code that help separate your content, below are a few of the most common:

<h1> - This is called the header 1 tag, this is the biggest title possible and when Google sees this they will know that is what the content on your page is about.

<h2> - This is the header 2 tag. If you are writing a piece of content that already contains a header 1 tag but you want to have a subtitle on your page, then using a <h2> tag will help Google understand the structure of the page. You can then continue this with <h3>, <h4> etc.

<p> - This stands for 'paragraph' it's the tag used for the main bulk of your text.

These are the only tags that you have to concern yourself with at the moment, below is an example piece of content that has a good structure to it.

Now if we take a look at the HTML for this content you will see this:

The first thing you'll see is the title 'Online SEO Courses Manchester' has the <h1> tags on it, this tells Google that this is what the content below is going to be about. Then underneath you have the <p> tags which are where the main content on your site will be along with the <em> tag (those tags have made the content italic which I have just done for the purpose of this example). Then you have the <h2> tags followed by the listed bullet points.

So overall here the content has been laid out nice and neat for the front end user and also the code in the back is easy enough for Google's bot to understand. If you keep this kind of structure in mind for every piece of content that you write then you are making Google's job a whole lot easier which in turn increases the chance of being indexed quicker, ranking higher etc.
