From the long-awaited Frozen sequel to live-action remakes of Disney classics – Mulan, Maleficent:Mistress of Evil, The Little Mermaid, and more – it’s hard to remember exactly which of Mickey Mouse’s relatives in the Walt Disney Studios orbit are releasing films, and when. Luckily, we now have a list for that. Plus, Disney’s recent acquisition of 21st Century Fox and its subsidiaries makes its multiplex domination even stronger thanks to the inclusion of The New Mutants (if it doesn’t move, again), a Bob’s Burgers movie, and the long-awaited Avatar 2 – and 3, 4, and 5.

Below, we’ve gathered details for some of the flashier Disney-associated films that are expected to hit in the next few years – it’s the most comprehensive new Disney movies list you’ll find. We’ve also included some upcoming projects that are still awaiting release dates or titles, such as the once-endangered third volume of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Jungle Book 2 – and movies that were taken off the theatrical release slate with the promise that they will instead live on in Disney’s upcoming steaming service, Disney+. We’ll add to this list as more information becomes available, especially in regards to the speculation surrounding Marvel and Pixar movies still waiting release dates – and in some cases, titles – as well as other rumored and in-development films like Flora & Ulysses and the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean.

Below, you’ll find the Disney-produced projects that have locked release dates – for now. Among them are big-hitters (Frozen 2!) and a Star Wars flick and yet more live-action remakes. Expect some of the dates later in the set to shift as announcements are made. We’ll keep this list updated so you’re always on top of what’s coming up. We’ve noted which of these are Twentieth Century Fox and Fox Searchlight releases.

Ad Astra (2019) (Twentith Century Fox)

Pitt stars as an engineer who attempts to track down his dad, who may have gotten lost in the solar system 20 years ago when he set off for Neptune in the hopes of finding extra-terrestrial life. Jones plays his missing father.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, Sam Riley, Harris Dickinson, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, Lesley Manville, Chiwetel Ejiofor

We’re not quite done with this revisionist history of Sleeping Beauty, after all. Angelina Jolie returns to star as the powerful fairy who very much had a right to carry a grudge. But things seemed to be right by her at the end of the first movie. What new dangers will await? We’ll have to wait and see, but right now we do know that Deadpool’s Ed Skrein will play the new villain and that new cast members also include Michelle Pfeiffer and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Lady and the TrampRelease date: November 12, 2019

This live-action remake will premiere on Disney’s streaming service, Disney+, November 12. The Leftovers’ Justin Theroux will voice Tramp while Thor: Ragnarok’s Tessa Thompson will voice his leading Lady. Sam Elliott and Janelle Monáe are also in the voice cast.

Ford v. Ferrari (2019) (Twentieth Century Fox)

Starring: Christian Bale, Matt Damon

Get your motor running. This biopic follows automotive designer Carroll Shelby (Damon) and driver Ken Miles (Bale), who led a team tasked with building a car that would end Ferrari’s reign at the infamous 24 Hours of Le Mans. Other cast members include Jon Bernthal as auto executive Lee Iacocca and Tracy Letts as Ford Motor Company scion Henry Ford II.

Frozen 2 (2019)

Fans haven’t been able to let the first movie go since its 2013 release, so it’s safe to expect an avalanche of box office support when the Frozen sequel finally hits the theaters. Much of the plot and other details for this film are under wraps, but one has to wonder where the story can go now that Idina Menzel’s ice queen Elsa has learned to, well, chill out. Perhaps she’ll even do what some fans have been asking for for awhile and get herself a girlfriend.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

The third (and final) chapter in the Star Wars sequel trilogy welcomes back The Force Awakens’ J.J. Abrams as director and co-writer (with Chris Terrio) after director Colin Trevorrow vacated the project – a move that pushed the film’s release date six months. The cast, which is almost as long as the text in an opening crawl, also added newcomers to the franchise like Keri Russell and Richard E. Grant. The late Carrie Fisher will also be seen, thanks to the repurposing of unused footage from past films.

Spies in Disguise (2019) (Twentieth Century Fox)

Starring: Will Smith, Tom Holland, Rashida Jones

A family-friendly movie tailor-made for those who need to escape to the multiplex during the holidays, this animated film has Smith voicing “the world’s most awesome spy” Lance Sterling and Holland as a socially-inept gadget whiz. The two must team up to save the world. Only one problem: Sterling has been turned into a pigeon.

The King's Man (2020) (Twentieth Century Fox)Release Date: February 14, 2020

Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode, Harris Dickinson

A Valentine’s Day treat for Anglophiles and others who love witty banter and bloody action, the third film in the Kingsman franchise is a prequel to the first two films. The movie welcomes a new cast – including Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton – and sees one man facing off against some of history’s worst villains as they plot a potentially world-ending war.

The Call of the Wild (Twentieth Century Fox)
Release Date: February 21, 2020

Starring: Harrison Ford, Dan Stevens, Karen Gillan, Omar Sy, Bradley Whitford

How to Train Your Dragon’s Sanders is helming the latest adaptation of the classic Jack London novel (this one being a mix of live-action and CGI-animation). It follows a dog named Buck who is kidnapped from his California home and sold to freight haulers in the Yukon.

Onward (2020)
Release date: March 6, 2020

Starring: Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Octavia Spencer

Is it an errand or is it a quest? Semantics aside, this film from Monsters University’s Scanlon is a “suburban fantasy” about two elf brothers who set out to see if magic still exists in the world. For a touch of sweetness, note that this film is inspired by Scanlon’s life with his older brother.

Black Widow
Release Date: May 1, 2020

Starring: Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh

Marvel has announced that the Scarlett Johansson-led film will be the first project to emerge from the studio in 2020. First revealed in January of 2018 with Jac Schaeffer writing the script, the film became Marvel’s fastest-track project ever with Lore’s Cate Shortland signing on to direct in July of last year. The film features David Harbour as Alexei – a.k.a. The Red Guardian – Florence Pugh as Yelena, O-T Fagbenle as Mason, and Rachel Weisz as Melina. The film is a prequel to the events of Avengers: Endgame, but is still unclear if it takes places years or decades earlier.

Mulan (2020)

Starring: Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, Jet Li

The live-action remake of this 1998 animated storyof girl-powered determination comes from director Niki Caro – herself no stranger to that kind of story, having directed 2002’s Whale Rider. Chinese-American actress-singer Liu Yifei stars as the girl who would defy tradition and fight as a man to protect her country while other familiar names include Jet Li as the Emperor of China and Jason Scott Lee, who starred in Disney’s 1994 live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book.

The New Mutants (2020) (Twentieth Century Fox)

Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, Alice Braga

Said to be a mix of the superhero and horror genres, the final film in the X-Men franchise follows a group of young mutants who just discover their abilities and are being held captive in a secret facility. The movie has been long delayed, so watch this date.

Artemis Fowl (2020)
Release date: May 29, 2020

Starring: Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Hong Chau, Nonso Anozie, Josh Gad, Judi Dench

This sci-fi fantasy film stars newcomer Ferdia Shaw as the teenage genius who discovers that fairies are real and then decides it’d be a good idea to kidnap one of them and hold her for ransom. The cast also includes Judi Dench, Hong Chau, and Josh Gad as the kleptomaniac dwarf, Mulch Diggums. The story is based on the first novel in Irish author Eoin Colfer’s eight-part book series, because it would be very unlike Disney to miss a chance at a franchise.

Soul

The new flashy Pixar film promises to “take you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions.” If that sounds like quite the tall order, remember that Docter also directed and co-wrote the 2015 hit Inside Out — a movie all about feelings having their own feelings.

Free Guy (2020) (Twentieth Century Fox)
Release Date: July 3, 2020

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery, Joe Keery

Reynolds stars as a bank teller who finds out he’s actually a background character in a video game. Now he must try to stop the game’s inventor from shutting down the operation in this film directed by Night at the Museum‘s Levy.

Bob's Burgers (2020) (Twentieth Century Fox)

Oh to imagine all the burger-related puns that could fit into a full-length movie. Hoping to rekindle the box-office magic that The Simpsons Movie did in 2007 (it grossed $183,100,000) the movie adaptation of this popular Fox sitcom is now officially a go after a lot of red tape in the Disney-Fox acquisition.

Jungle Cruise (2020)

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, Paul Giamatti

Following the path that Pirates of the Caribbean charted so successfully — and The Haunted Mansion charted less successfully — this new film (franchise?) is based on the Disney theme park attraction of the same name. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt star, respectively, as a riverboat captain and a scientist on a hunt for a magical cure in this Depression-era action adventure. Comedian Jack Whitehall also joins in the fun, playing Blunt’s character’s brother (watch for more of him – he was also in Disney’s November 2018 film, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms). The movie was originally slated to premiere in 2019, but was bumped in fall 2018.

The One and Only Ivan

Starring: Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Angelina Jolie

This live-action/CG hybrid, which is based on Katherine Applegate‘s children’s book of the same name and written by Mike White, follows a gorilla who has become accustomed to his life in a glass walled-cell in a shopping mall and hardly ever thinks about his time in the wild – until he meets a baby elephant. The all-star cast also includes Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren and The Florida Project’s Brooklynn Prince.

Death on the Nile (2020) (Twentieth Century Fox)
Release Date: October 9, 2020

Starring: Gal Gadot, Letitia Wright, Armie Hammer, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Bateman

Branagh, who directed and starred in the 2017 adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express, returns to the universe of Agatha Christie mysteries. This one finds his Belgian detective Hercule Poirot forced to cut his beach-side vacation short when a young heiress turns up murdered.

Eternals (2020)

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani

In April of 2018, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed a film based on the Eternals comic book and concept was in development. Soon after, The Rider’s Chloe Zhao became its director. Based on characters and situations imagined by Jack Kirby, the Eternals are a race of fantastically powerful proto-humans engineered by the Celestials (more on them in a moment) to harness vast amounts of “cosmic energy.”

Ron’s Gone Wrong (Twentieth Century Fox)

Set in the (possibly) not-so-distant future where talking and digitally-connected bots are now kids’ best friends, this animated feature focuses on an 11-year-old who worries that something has gone wrong with his robot comrade.

West Side Story (Twentieth Century Fox)
Release Date: December 18, 2020

Starring: Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Rita Moreno

Director Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner bring a new generation to this tale of star-crossed lovers struggling to stay together amid gang warfare. One can only imagine that the film will concentrate particularly hard on the themes of outsiders and immigration – especially given the casting of Rita Moreno, who crossed off the “O” in her EGOT when she won the Academy Award for playing the headstrong Anita in the first film.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Starring: Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung

In March 2019, Short Term 12’s Destin Daniel Cretton emerged as the director of a film based on Marvel’s 1970s comic book The Hands of Shang-Chi: Master of Kung-Fu. In the comics, Shang-Chi was the son of legendary literary villain Fu Manchu. Learning the truth about his dad’s business, he used his martial arts prowess against his father and any other Marvel baddie ready to go against his mighty hands.

Nimona (2021) (Twentieth Century Fox)

This animated film is based on the graphic novels by Noelle Stevenson – a.k.a. the creator of Netflix’s new version of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power – and tells the story of a young shape shifter who happens to be the sidekick of a super-villain.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Release date: May 7, 2021

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong

Benedict Cumberbatch returns as the Sorcerer Supreme with Elizabeth Olsen joining him as the Scarlet Witch in what director Scott Derrickson calls “the first scary MCU movie.” Though not announced as a participant in The Multiverse of Madness, we still think Strange will face Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) as he tries to amass all the magic for himself, a notion teased in the first film’s post-credit stinger.

Cruella (2021)

Taking a page from the Maleficent playbook, this new film plans to look at Disney classic 101 Dalmatians from the view behind villain Cruella de Vil’s dark sunglasses. While it’s been reported that Emma Stone is starring, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna co-wrote the script. Broadway’s Alex Timbers was set to direct, but reports say I, Tonya’s Craig Gillespie is taking over. More details – as they say – are spotty.

Indiana Jones 5 (2021)

Ready your leather jackets and fedoras. After much waiting, it seems the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise will finally arrive in theaters in summer 2021. While plot details about the rugged archaeologist’s latest adventures have truly yet to be unearthed – there has reportedly been some writer turnover with the script – both star Harrison Ford and director Steven Spielberg keep promising it’s going to happen.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Shortly before Comic-Con 2019, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi signed on to return for a fourth installment in the God of Thunder franchise. In a surprise move, Marvel revealed Natalie Portman is returning to the series as the new Mighty Thor, a twist pulled from an excellent Thor comic book series by Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman, and others. Meanwhile, Tessa Thompson will return as Valkyrie, the king of New Asgard who must find a Queen.

Avatar 2 (2021)

Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver

The long-awaited sequel to director Cameron’s box-office hit and Best Picture nominee checks in with Worthington’s former human, Jake Sully, and his partner, Neytiri (Saldana), a member of Na’vi royalty. Weaver, whose character died in the first film, is back in a new role. Lang, whose character also died in the first film, is also back (somehow). New cast members include Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, and David Thewlis.

Untitled Star Wars Movie

Disney has announced three untitled Star Wars movies, to kick off a once-every-two-year run beginning in 2022. Details are super-scant right now, but we do know this will be the trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff and not the new trilogy from Rian Johnson, which has yet to land a release date.

The Little Mermaid

This remake of the Disney classic is one of the most anticipated releases the studio has coming – at least, if the feverishness of the rumor mill is anything to go by. We know that R&B star Halle Bailey will play Ariel, and Awkwafina will play Scuttle, and it’s rumored Melissa McCarthy will play Ursula. We also know that Harry Styles won’t be playing Prince Eric. The movie, directed by Rob Marshall, does not yet have a release date.

The Woman in the Window (Twentieth Century Fox)

Starring: Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Brian Tyree Henry, Wyatt Russell, Anthony Mackie

Tracy Letts adapted this screenplay from the popular A. J. Finn novel. Adams plays an agoraphobic child psychologist, and nosey neighbor, who witnesses a crime and now must decide if she should contact authorities. Expect to hear it murmured about during awards season.

29 Dates

This young adult rom-com, which is based on the Melissa de la Cruz novel, will appear on Disney+. While no cast, director or writer has been announced, we know that this story centers on a 16-year-old Korean exchange student who meets a host of eligible bachelors from around the globe. It has been compared to author Jenny Han’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before series (the second of which is currently being adapted into a feature film for Netflix).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Everything about a third installment of the Guardians section of the MCU seemed good to go and the film was heading for a 2020 release date. Then writer-director James Gunn was fired when some of his old and not-so-politically-correct Tweets surfaced and his leads wrote an open letter in support of him – causing some to wonder if Disney should just do an epic recast. After Warner Bros. jumped at the opportunity to hire Gunn to write and direct the next Suicide Squad movie, Disney re-hired him to write and direct Guardians 3.

Hunchback

M. Butterfly playwright David Henry Hwang is writing the script for this live-action telling of author Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics for the 1996 animated film (among many, many other Disney projects) are also on board. So is actor Josh Gad — but so far just as a producer, even though he did Tweet a fun image of himself outside of the famous French cathedral.

Jungle Book 2
Director: Jon Favreau

Jungle Book writer Justin Marks told Rotten Tomatoes that he and Favreau co-wrote the sequel to their blockbuster film in December 2017, but they have to wait until the director finishes work on the revival of The Lion King before they start production. And while Neel Sethi, who starred as Mowgli in the 2016 film, has said that he’s down to return, Marks stressed that the character has aged along with the young actor. “Jon and I saw The Jungle Book story as a coming-of-age story and the second movie continues in that direction,” Marks says. “Really, if it’s done right, it should break some hearts with where it goes.” He added that the sequel will pull in more animal characters from author Rudyard Kipling’s book because (duh) “there’s such a wealth of characters in that world.”

Lilo & Stitch

Another fan-favorite Disney film to ride the waves of the live-action/CG trend, this upcoming adaptationof the Hawaiian-set film about friendship and family is being produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of the live-action Aladdin. No cast or director has been announced, but rising star Mike Van Waes is reportedly writing the script.

Here’s another comedy awaiting a home on streaming service, Disney+. This one stars Workaholics and Pitch Perfect’s Adam DeVine as a former counselor at a magic camp who returns to his old stomping grounds in the hopes of reigniting his career. Instead, he finds a bunch of kids who need a mentor.

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Bill Hader, Billy Eichner, Shirley MacLaine, Julie Hagerty

Anna Kendrick as Santa’s daughter, Noelle Claus? And Bill Hader as his son? The gift-giving season may come early for families who like fantasy adventure comedies. The catch? Said families have to have Disney’s soon-to-launch streaming service, Disney+, as the film’s theatrical release has been frozen. Bah humbug.

Sadé

One of the handful of original properties in the works for Disney, this live-action fairytale centers on an African princess who must accept her newly discovered magical powers and protect her kingdom when its threatened by a mysterious evil force. Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer are writing the script and Dope director Rick Famuyiwa is one of the producers, but a director and cast have not been named. The film was announced a few months after Disney saw both massive success for its Marvel film, Black Panther, and allegations of whitewashing its The Princess and the Frog heroine, Princess Tiana, in a promo for its animated film, Ralph Breaks the Internet. (The character was redrawn for the film’s release).

Another classic IP that’s getting a modern rendition, the third chapter in the Sister Act franchise is written by Regina Hicks (HBO’s Insecure) and Karin Gist (Fox’s Star) and will air on streaming service Disney+. Plot and cast details are scarce, but it was reported that original star Whoopi Goldberg would only cameo in this film.

One of several projects slated to arrive on new streaming service Disney+, this film is based on the Jerry Spinelli novel and is about a teenager who throws off the delicate ecosystem of an Arizona high school by refusing to conform when she joins its ranks after years of home schooling. The script is written by Kristin Hahn, who knows a thing or two about writing strong-willed teens (she also wrote the Netflix movie Dumplin’). Other stars besides America’s Got Talent alum VanderWaal include Giancarlo Esposito, Darby Stanchfield, Graham Verchere and Karan Brar. It is also not to be confused by the similarly named TV series for rival streaming service, DC Universe.

The Sword in the Stone

Another live-action version of an animated Disney favorite, this film is also awaiting a release date on the Disney+ streaming platform. Last we heard, 28 Weeks Later… director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was directing the film based on Game of Throneswriter Bryan Cogman’s script. It was also reportedthat production began this fall in Belfast, Ireland.

Timmy Failure

Starring: Ophelia Lovibond

An upcoming addition to streaming service Disney+, this film is based on author Stephan Pastis’ book series about a tween-aged boy who believes he is the best detective in town, (as evident by the name of his company: Total Failure Inc.). British actress Ophelia Lovibond plays his mom, Patty Failure.

Togo
Director: Ericson Core
Starring: Willem Dafoe

The Florida Project’s Willem Dafoe will star as dog sled racer Leonhard Seppala in this live-action film. Based on a true story, it covers a 1925 relay to transport diphtheria antitoxin serum to an Alaskan town suffering an outbreak and is not to be confused with Balto, the 1995 film about the other dog (and his owner) in that race. Togo will also eventually be part of the Disney+ streaming service library.
